Samsung Li-ion Battery

Samsung Li-ion Battery

Samsung SDI 34.6 kWh Lithium-ion Battery Systems

Based on widely proven, high safety Samsung SDI UPS battery modules this system features 34.6 kWh / 67 Ah cabinets that may be connected together for additional autonomy. These provide a battery solution that is more compact, lighter and more temperature resilient than VRLA systems with faster discharge and recharge capabilities, making it suitable for critical applications in data centres, defence, healthcare, transportation and manufacturing.

More Information

The Samsung SDI lithium-ion battery system is specifically approved for use with KOHLER Uninterruptible Power’s KOHLER PW 6000 (60-120 kVA), KOHLER PW 9250DPA, 9500DPA and MF series UPS systems. Samsung SDI is one of the most experienced producers of lithium-ion batteries in the world and has a long record of safely supplying systems for use in critical power systems.

Housed in a tough enclosure, lithium-ion battery technology provides reliable, lightweight and compact energy storage for UPS systems.

Each battery cabinet has dedicated battery management systems at single module and rack level, plus fuse, circuit breaker protection and a dedicated 24 V power supply.

A single cabinet configuration of 34.6 kWh comprises one switchgear, one switched mode power supply (SMPS) and 17 battery modules.

For additional battery capacity, cabinets can be installed in parallel to increase capacity up to 5 MW per single system.

Switchgear collects all information about each battery cell and controls all battery module management systems calculating state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH). It also contains a moulded case circuit breaker and a shunt resistor.

SMPS supplies the power for BMS and communicates with UPS and other racks in parallel. It is available in two versions with or without BMS for single or multiple parallel configuration.

Each battery module contains eight series-connected 67 Ah, 3.8 V cells and a dedicated battery module management system (BMS), which measures major parameters, controls cell balancing and interacts with the switchgear.

Safety Features

Cell construction is such that a safety function layer prevents the possibility of an electrical short between the anode and cathode and a multilayer separator prevents overcharging by blocking the passage of lithium ions. In terms of secondary safety a safety vent allows gas venting in case of internal overpressure, a safety fuse is present in case of short circuit and an overcharge safety device will interrupt the current in case of overcharge.

At the module level the battery management system controls voltage, temperature and charge balancing whilst indicating status with LED indicators. A non-flammable (UL94 grade V0) plastic casing is used to mechanically protect each module from external force whilst an insulating cover protects the power cable connections, themselves current rated to 470A for safety.

Why Lithium-Ion batteries?

Valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries – sometimes known as sealed lead–acid batteries – have many advantages and have traditionally been the battery of choice for backup power in UPS systems. However, battery technology has progressed rapidly in recent years. Today, lithium-ion battery technology is an attractive option – especially where high energy density and low weight and greater operating temperature ranges are important. Advantages such as longer lifespan, smaller size and weight, shorter recharging times and falling prices only add to the appeal of lithium-ion battery solutions.

Key Benefits

  • Outstanding performance
  • High reliability
  • Fast charge and discharge rate
  • Higher power efficiency
  • Increasingly competitive cost of ownership
  • Lightweight
  • Longer battery life

What is a battery?

A battery is a device that uses chemical means to store electrical energy and can be found in any number of shapes, sizes, voltages and capacities.

When two materials (usually dissimilar metals) are immersed in a solution (electrolyte) they conduct electricity between the ‘plates’ which gives rise to an electrical potential. The value of the potential (or voltage) depends on the plate materials and the electrolyte used. Examples of different battery composition include lead-acid, nickel cadmium (Ni-Cad), and lithium-ion.
