Behind the Uninterruptible Power Supply Calculations
Choosing the right UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is critical.
Whether you’re protecting servers, medical devices, or industrial systems—accurate sizing matters.
An undersized UPS won’t protect your equipment.
An oversized one leads to wasted energy and higher costs.
Use our UPS Load Calculator to find the right solution quickly and easily.
How we calculate UPS Load in kVA
UPS systems are typically rated in kilovolt-amperes (kVA) because they need to account for both real and apparent power. Why? Because not all electrical loads use power efficiently—especially when motors, transformers, or other inductive components are involved. That’s where the power factor (PF) comes in.
Here’s the simple formula:
kW = kVA × Power Factor (PF)
Real Power (kW)
This is the actual power your equipment consumes to operate.
You’ll usually find this figure listed by the manufacturer in kilowatts (kW).
Power Factor (PF)
Power factor measures how effectively power is used.
- A PF of 1 means all power is used effectively. kW =kVA
- A lower PF means some is wasted—often due to inductive or capacitive loads causing a leading or lagging power factor.
Most industrial equipment has a PF around 0.8 lagging, but it varies depending on the device and type of equipment as it can also be a leading power factor.
How to Calculate UPS Load in kVA
The power factor measures how effectively your equipment uses electricity. A PF of 1 means kVA =KW .
Take the Guesswork Out of UPS Sizing. With the Kohler UPS Load Calculator, you’ll instantly know your exact load requirements using your system’s volts, amps per phase, and power factor.
Easily determine your UPS requirements with our simple and accurate UPS kVA Load Calculator.
